What to Do After a Car Accident
A Step-by-Step Guide from a Personal Injury Attorney
Car accidents happen in an instant. Whether it’s a minor fender-bender or a serious collision, knowing what to do in the moments and days after an accident can protect your health, your legal rights, and your financial future.
As a personal injury attorney who’s helped countless accident victims, here’s what I recommend you do immediately following a crash:
1. Prioritize Safety
Check yourself and others for injuries.
If the vehicles can be safely moved, pull over to a secure area to avoid further danger.
2. Call 911
Even if the accident seems minor, always call the police. An official police report can be a crucial piece of evidence if you need to file an insurance claim or pursue legal action later.
3. Exchange Information
Collect and exchange the following with the other driver(s):
Name and contact information
Take photos of their driver’s license, insurance card, license plate and vehicle. . Driver’s license number
If there are any witnesses, get their name and contact information.
4. Document the Accident
Documentation can be critical in proving what actually happened. If it is safe to take pictures before moving the vehicles, it is a good idea to take photos of where the vehicles are.
Use your phone to take clear photos of:
All vehicles involved (from multiple angles), damage to any vehicle involved
Road conditions, skid marks, traffic signs, debris
Any visible injuries
5. Seek Medical Attention
Even if you feel “fine,” it’s essential to get checked out. Some injuries (like whiplash, concussions, or internal trauma) may not show symptoms right away. Prompt medical care creates a record that links your injuries to the accident.
Do not be surprised if you feel worse in the days following the accident, this is common. It is important to seek medical attention if you are in pain.
6. Contact a Personal Injury Attorney
Before signing anything or accepting a settlement offer, talk to an experienced attorney. You don’t pay us unless we win—and consultations are always free.

OTHER IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS:
I would highly suggest to talk to an attorney before speaking with the other driver’s insurance company. They may want you to make a recorded statement, which can be used against you in the future. Additionally, you may want to notify your insurance company of the accident, it is a good idea to report the accident and give them the facts. They may want you to make a recorded statement, you are not required to give a recorded statement and I would speak to an attorney before you do so.
